Surprise Marriage Proposal at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park in San Diego, California
Stevie and Dana were visiting San Diego from Chicago, trading the snow and winter coats for sunshine and a sundress. Stevie told Dana they were going for a quick walk at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park before their dinner reservation. Totally normal. Casual. Just a stroll along the cliffs while the sky lights up with pink and orange hues.
What Dana didn’t know was that Stevie had a plan. And a ring. And a carefully placed picnic with a photographer hiding down the path.
Ocean Views, Flowers, Champagne - Oh My!
Before they arrived, I set up a little picnic overlooking the ocean — blanket, champagne, flowers, the works. Nothing over the top, just something simple and thoughtful tucked into one of those quiet cliffside spots where you can hear the waves echoing below.
When I asked Stevie what kind of flowers Dana liked, he said, “Anything yellow. Dana is sunshine.” I mean… come on. That’s love right there.
Stevie and Dana wandered down the path, chatting and giggling while Stevie’s heart about burst through his chest. Then Dana spotted the picnic.
Wait… that looks nice.
Wait… is that for us?
And then it clicked.
Stevie guided her down the little hill toward the blanket, and that’s when the emotions started rolling in — laughter, shock, gasps, and hands over the face. Dana’s reaction was joyful, surprised, and very much a yes. I knew before officially meeting Dana that Stevie was right, this girl is sunshine personified. They were both so incredibly giddy and over-the-moon excited for what was to come.
The One Where Dana and Stevie Get Engaged
After the initial excitement (and a minute to breathe and stare at the ring a few more times), we moved into engagement photos while the golden light peaked.
First up: ring shots. The diamond deserved its moment in the spotlight, sparkling away. I always begin with ring shots as it gives my couples time to warm up to the camera and they can chat about what happened behind-the-scenes! It also provides additional time for them to check out the ring and freak out over how stunningly gorgeous it is.
From there we wandered along the cliffs a bit — soaking in the views and capturing candid, warm, and joyful moments filled with love. Then came time for the champagne pop! Dana was given the honors and she nailed it — what a pop it was! They toasted to the future and watched the sun dip below the horizon.
