Personal Branding Portraits at DTLA Visuals in Los Angeles | Branding Photography for Therapists, Creatives, and Professionals

I drove up from San Diego to photograph Axeline Johnson at DTLA Visuals, a beautiful natural light studio in Downtown Los Angeles with soft neutral tones, sculptural furniture, curved architecture, and the kind of minimalistic warmth that serves as an excellent canvas.

The goal for the session was to create a mix of natural professional headshots and creative lifestyle portraits for Axeline’s new website and online presence. We wanted the images to feel polished but still approachable — professional and full of personality.

DTLA Visuals’ Minimalistic Warmth Studio

The studio featured soft natural light pouring through massive windows, lots of textures, and beautifully designed nooks and crannies that made me want to immediately rearrange my own apartment when I got home. The space itself gave a clean, elevated feeling without making the portraits feel overly corporate. It felt editorial and cozy at the same time, which is honestly my favorite combination for personal branding photography.

Natural, Professional Headshots

Axeline is a psychiatrist who works with individuals from all walks of life and treats a wide range of psychiatric conditions, including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and OCD, while also having a particular interest in aging-related mental health concerns.

One thing we talked about before the session was wanting her photos to feel approachable and grounded. Friendly and warm with a level of professionalism. Especially in mental health care, people are often searching for someone who feels safe before they ever book a consultation. A website photo can genuinely shape whether someone feels comfortable reaching out.

So we focused on creating portraits that felt warm, relaxed, and natural — the kind of images where you feel like you already know the person behind the credentials. The human who you can be most vulnerable with.

We started with professional headshots for her new website and online presence, then gradually moved into more lifestyle-driven imagery throughout the studio.

Authenticity Makes Your Branding Session Elite

There is always a shift that happens during branding sessions.

At first, everyone is a little aware of the camera. Soon enough, the person who claimed to be so awkward in front of the camera finds their flow, loosens up, and finds themselves again. That’s where the best images live.

Axeline brought along notebooks, candles, her laptop, and a coffee mug featuring her friend’s business logo as a sentimental touch. Little details like that always end up making branding photos feel more lived-in and authentic. Giving potential clients a glimpse into the person you are outside of the office is as important as showing who you are inside of it.

We played with movement, different corners of the studio, softer seated portraits, working shots, and more editorial compositions that let the architecture and natural light of the space shine too.

Why Personal Branding Photography Matters

The best branding portraits don’t just show what you do. They help people get a feel for you. Your personality, your energy, your work, your presence.

Especially for therapists, psychiatrists, creatives, and small business owners, your online presence is often someone’s first interaction with you. Having photos that feel natural and aligned with your actual personality makes such a huge difference.

Also, updating your brand imagery as you evolve is an investment in yourself and your business. You and your services are bound to change and that should be reflected in your personal branding.

Branding Photography in Southern California & Beyond

As a San Diego personal branding photographer, I photograph branding sessions, portraits, and lifestyle imagery for creatives, entrepreneurs, therapists, artists, and professionals throughout Southern California, including Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, and beyond. I’m also available for projects throughout California, including Northern California and destination branding sessions.

I absolutely love creating imagery that feels modern, relaxed, editorial, and actually reflective of the person in front of the camera.

And if you’re worried about being awkward in photos, I regret to inform you that almost everyone feels that way, including your photographer. You are in extremely good company. Let’s chat about your session!
