A Ceremony Among Roses

There’s something about Descanso Gardens that feels like a deep exhale. Just outside the noise of Los Angeles, it’s a quiet pocket of light, trees, and stillness — basically, the perfect setting for an intimate and meaningful wedding ceremony.

Iva and Harrison recently relocated from Oʻahu to Southern California and seamlessly wove a little bit of Hawaiian culture into the ceremony. It was personal in every sense of the word — from their vows to the flowers in Iva’s bouquet, which were all lovingly picked from her mom’s garden. These are the kinds of details that stick with you. Their ceremony took place in the Rose Garden with immediate family present. Their officiant, Bear, crafted a ceremony that was personal, layered, and heartfelt. She spoke about their journey: moving across an ocean, building a new life, and now starting a family (maternity photos coming soon).

After the ceremony and signing their marriage certificate, we explored the gardens and found gorgeous backdrops at every turn. From oak-lined paths to curated botanical spaces like the Rose Garden, Oak Forest, and Mission Fountain, every corner feels intimate and cinematic. The quiet trails, towering oaks, and filtered light is every photographer’s dream. It was one of those easy-going afternoons where everything just worked — no timeline stress, no chaos, just two people being completely themselves. If you’re a couple who wants your wedding day to feel calm, grounded, and like you, Descanso delivers.

Iva and Harrison are two of the kindest humans I’ve had the privilege of photographing. The way they look at each other, the way they laugh mid-kiss, the way they care for their family and friends. They are the definition of good people, deserve all the love in the world, and are going to be the best parents.

Eloping in Southern California: Things to Keep in Mind

Thinking about eloping in SoCal? First of all: excellent choice. Second of all: here are a few tips, based on shooting dozens of small weddings and elopements in the area.

  • Permits: Places like Descanso Gardens often require a photo permit and/or reservation, especially for wedding photography. Get in touch with their events team early.

  • Timing: Early morning and late afternoon provide fantastic light, but morning offers the fewest crowds. This timing also helps keep things cool during summer months.

  • What to Wear: Comfort is key, especially if you’re walking through gardens or parks. Flowy dresses, soft fabrics, and neutral tones always photograph beautifully.

  • Vendors to Consider: Even if you're eloping, consider bringing in a few thoughtful vendors — an officiant who gets you, a florist for a show-stopping bouquet, and a photographer who makes you feel at ease. (Hi, I’m Mallory. I do that part.)
