Surprise Proposal and Birthday Party Celebration in Encinitas, California

San Diego Proposal Photographer

Best birthday ever!

Tori was in for a busy day. Little did she know. Max and Tori were in town for Labor Day weekend which also coincided with Tori’s birthday. Max had a plan to lure her to Powerhouse Park in Encinitas where they were going to meet “friends for a quick drink.” Instead, he got down on one knee and asked Tori the biggest question one can ask. She said yes and was then surprised by the presence of her mom, dad, brother, and sister.

It is crucial to find a photographer who you can trust in case any hiccups should arise. On this day, we got a hiccup. I am not only there to capture the moment, but to also create a scene that my client envisioned. I planned to be at the agreed upon spot ahead of time to set up my equipment and gather Tori’s family. When I arrived, there was a little old woman lounging in her chair under an umbrella on the grass. The problem was that she was right in the middle of the shot. Usually I could improvise and come from a different angle but there were limited hiding places and I knew Max would want the ocean in the background. My hands were tied.

I am not one who is comfortable with disturbing people but time was running out so I strapped on my mask and approached her. I filled her in on the situation and asked if she would be open to moving to another spot in the grass. Thankfully she was VERY kind and understanding. I helped her pack up her umbrella and find a cosy spot down the hill. We moseyed down, sat her back in her chair, and I thanked her profusely. Max told me later that Tori’s family was still talking about the elderly woman and how I handled the situation *hair flip*

Tori was completely surprised. She cried and had the biggest smile on her face. Her family appeared and everyone hugged and offered their congratulations. After snapping some candids and a brief portrait session, we were off to Max’s father’s house for a big birthday/proposal celebration!

When I pulled up to this house, I couldn’t believe my eyes. For a second I thought, “No way this is it.” I studied architecture for two years in undergrad and this home pleased that part of me to no end. It was one of the most stunning houses I’ve ever been in. Max and Tori pulled up in a vintage Lincoln continental to see friends and family equipped with kazoos and bells up above.

Champagne was popped, tequila was poured, and gifts were given. Tori received a crown saying “bride to be” that she sported for the rest of the party. Max was given a sash saying “groom to be” which he wore for about thirty seconds. When I say this is a fun group of people, I mean it. I had such a blast spending the day with them and feel so honored to have been there to witness this proposal and the celebration that followed.
