Haley and Samantha’s wedding day unfolded in a series of small, meaningful moments. The deep breaths before seeing each other for the first time, sharing cake in iconic Balboa Park, and exchanging vows on a cliff overlooking the ocean at sunset. It was thoughtful, joyful, a little adventurous, and beautiful in every way.

The First Look

Haley and Samantha planned to meet on the lawn in front of the San Diego County Administration Building to see each other for the first time that day. Surrounded by palm trees with the bay nearby, it was the perfect start to an intimate wedding day. Samantha pulled up to the courthouse and in the blink of an eye, Haley felt a tap on the shoulder and it was time to see her bride. The moment was filled with a mix of anticipation and excitement — once they faced each other, the nervous energy shifted into laughter and lots of smiles.

After a few portraits outside, we headed upstairs to check in for their courthouse ceremony. Read more about the process here.

Now, We Wait…

Between signing in and the ceremony, we took a few portraits in front of the San Diego mural in the waiting room. Sometimes the room is filled with families and couples ready to hear their name called, but on this day, we had the place to ourselves. Before we knew it, it was time! They exchanged rings, giggled back and forth, and finally shared their first kiss as wife and wife.

Once everything was official, we stepped back outside for a few more portraits around the building before heading to the next stop!

Cake at Spreckles Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park

The celebration continued in Balboa Park, where Haley and Samantha had planned a small cake cutting at the Spreckles Organ Pavilion.

The pavilion’s open architecture, the gardens nearby, and the soft afternoon light make it a beautiful spot to celebrate. Haley and Samantha cut their cake, shared a few bites and laughs, and then we explored the park, taking portraits among the arches, walkways, and palm trees.

One of the great things about planning an intimate wedding day like this is that there’s room to move slowly. No rushing between events. No rigid timeline breathing down your neck. Just time to walk, talk, kiss, and take it all in.

Sunset Vows on the Cliffs

For the final chapter, we traveled to Sunset Cliffs Natural Park just as the sun started making its way toward the horizon. This place is unreal with its the long stretches of coastline, waves crashing below, and the sky slowly shifting colors as the sun drops into the Pacific — I can’t imagine a more special place to exchange vows.

Haley and Samantha stood together on the cliffs and privately shared their heartfelt thoughts and feelings with one another. It was quiet and personal, followed by applause from passersby.

After their vows, they popped champagne and toasted the start of their marriage while the last light faded over the water. What a finale!

Why Choose to Elope?

Elopements aren’t about skipping the meaning of a wedding day — they’re about reshaping it around what matters most to you.

For some couples, that might mean a courthouse ceremony followed by portraits around the city. For others, it’s a day spent exploring the coastline, celebrating with loved ones. What makes elopements special is the space they create.

Space to breathe.
Space to be present.
Space to build a day that reflects your relationship instead of following a template.

Some couples love the energy of a big wedding with all their people in one place. Others feel more at home keeping things small and intentional. They are all special and meaningful in their own way.

Documenting Elopements and Intimate Weddings in California

What I love most about photographing elopements and small weddings in San Diego is how naturally the city lends itself to days like this. You can start at the courthouse, wander through historic architecture downtown, cut cake in Balboa Park, and end the evening on the cliffs with the ocean stretching out in front of you. The whole day becomes a collection of places and moments that are unforgettable.

Haley and Samantha planned a day that felt relaxed, personal, and very them — which is really the goal of any wedding, however it’s celebrated.

If you’re dreaming up your own courthouse wedding, an intimate elopement along the San Diego coast, engagement photos around the city, or a couples session somewhere meaningful to you, my camera and I are always ready to document it all as it unfolds.
