Step 1: Planning Your Special Day

Let's kick off this adventure with a little paperwork. Romantic, I know. You can complete your Marriage License paperwork in person, but online is recommended for a more seamless experience. There, you can schedule your appointment up to 7 weeks in advance!

You also have the option to obtain your marriage license and exchange vows all in one trip, sparing you the hassle of multiple courthouse visits. Should you decide to separate the paperwork and ceremony, rest assured that your marriage license remains valid for 90 days. Some couples find this approach appealing, allowing them to handle the administrative tasks upfront and savor a truly stress-free ceremony.

Some things to note before heading to the courthouse:

  • You will be required to present valid government issued photo ID (Drivers License, Passport, Military ID)

  • Both parties must be present

  • Public license ceremonies must have at least one witness or they can provide one for you for an additional $58

  • The fee for a civil ceremony is $107

  • A Public Marriage License costs $129 and a Confidential Marriage License costs $144. What is the difference?

The San Diego Courthouse offers indoor and outdoor ceremonies. The canopy of the West Arbor, adorned with vibrant bougainvillea, is a favorite amongst couples and does not have a guest limit. However, availability at this scenic outdoor spot may be limited because of weather, construction, events, etc. Find a list of scheduled dates where availability may be impacted here.

Should the weather forecast raise any worries about rain dampening your special day, rest assured that we have contingency plans in place. In the event of inclement weather, we can seamlessly transition your ceremony indoors; therefore, opting for an outdoor ceremony initially is highly recommended. Booking indoors may result in forfeiting the chance to take advantage of clear skies should the weather improve.

Step 2: Hire Your Photographer

Now, let's talk about capturing those precious moments. Hiring your courthouse wedding photographer early on is key. Locking in your photographer early ensures you get the date and time you desire. Plus, your photographer can double as your witness – talk about a win-win! Good news - I may know someone ;)

Step 3: Embrace the Moment

On the big day, block out at least two hours of time. Make sure to arrive at least 20 minutes early to account for parking (complimentary 3 hour parking located underground between Harbor Drive and Pacific Highway), security, and check-in processes. Take some time to soak up the excitement and snap a few photos before your ceremony.

Then, it’s time to say “I do!” San Diego courthouse wedding ceremonies are brief, typically lasting less than 10 minutes. Not your style? You can absolutely add your own personal touch to your civil ceremony. Politely ask the officiant if you can exchange your own vows and if time permits, they will usually accommodate your request. If not, you can always take the time afterwards to share your vows!

Step 4: Capture the Magic

After your ceremony, it’s time for your first official portrait session as a married couple. I am there as your photographer to guide you through the beautiful locations on the property, ensuring every moment is beautifully captured. For optimal lighting, I suggest booking an early morning appointment or a late afternoon appointment. If there are no available time slots at these times, no need to worry! The area surrounding the courthouse provides shady landscapes so beautiful photos will be taken at all hours of the day.

Step 5: Cherish the Memories

After 10 days to a few weeks, you will be able to request your Marriage Certificate which you will need in order to change your name if you choose. In addition, you’ll have this momentous occasion captured in stunning photographs for you and future generations to cherish forever.
