Graduation Portrait Session at the Geisel Library at UCSD in La Jolla, California

Graduation portraits not only celebrate a massive accomplishment in the moment to share with loved ones, but also there to look back on years from now — not just to remember what you wore, but to remember who you were and how far you’ve come. For Joanne, celebrating her graduation at UC San Diego’s Geisel Library felt like the perfect way to mark the end of one chapter and the start of whatever comes next. Thoughtful, strong, and a little cinematic.

The Geisel Library is iconic for a reason — all sharp angles, brutalist lines, and futuristic energy. It was designed to look like a spaceship and yes, mission accomplished. Fun fact: it’s named after Audrey and Theodor Seuss Geisel AKA Dr. Seuss.

The Vision: Moody and Film-Inspired

Joanne came in with inspiration that leaned film-forward, moody, and a little editorial. The evening was overcast — soft light, muted tones, no harsh shadows — which gave us that slightly nostalgic, cinematic feel.

Instead of forcing smiles or overly formal poses, we leaned into movement and ease. We played with motion blur, subtle walking shots, quiet moments, and angles that let the architecture do its thing while Joanne absolutely held her own in front of it — she was a natural! Relaxed, expressive, and straight-up COOL.

Graduation Photos That Feel Like You

Graduation is a big deal — but your photos don’t need to feel formal or forced to honor that. Whether you’re celebrating high school, undergrad, or earning a freaking doctorate, your session should feel personal, creative, and actually reflective of who you are at this phase in your life.

Joanne’s session was exactly that: a celebration of her accomplishment, her style, and her energy, set against one of San Diego’s coolest architectural landmarks. She has since moved to Texas and is working on airplanes — I told you she was cool!
